A MESSAGE FROM THE SAVE PAR 3 COMMITTEE

The Save Par 3 Committee was formed in 2007, after the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors temporarily removed the Par 3 property from consideration for rezoning to residential use. The property, comprised of two parcels, has been zoned PR, Parks, Recreation, and Open Space, for years, but this could change in 2009.

Over the last year, the Committee met with County Parks staff and various members of the community, to discuss the best use of the Par 3 property. It was decided that the larger size of the property lends it to a larger use. The decision to restore the golf course was based on the countywide need for 9-hole courses for beginners and the elderly, as well as the fact that the Aptos Par 3 Golf Course was successfully operated on the property for more than 35 years.

It is the mission of this committee to ensure public access to the Par 3 site for recreational purposes. Our goal is to pursue the means to purchase the property and reestablish an environmentally sustainable par 3 golf facility, as a Santa Cruz County Park. We believe that, through a combination of public and private grants and donations, this is possible.

We are asking for your help. Almost 1,500 of you signed a petition and temporarily stopped the rezoning. You signed hundreds of letters, and you came to meetings and spoke up for the need for recreation space. Now, we’re asking you to make a tax-deductible contribution to help buy the land and restore the par 3 golf course. Whether you play golf, know someone who does, or just enjoy seeing open space; join us in saving the Aptos Par 3. The more our community grows, the more important it is to save recreational space.
